Crumbling Chimney Mortar
Mortar failing before the brick is not a defect. It is how masonry is designed to work — and it is a signal that the joints have reached the end of their service life.
Mortar Is Meant to Be the Weak Part
This surprises people, so it is worth stating first: mortar is deliberately softer than the brick around it. Masonry moves, absorbs water and expands with heat, and something has to give when it does. The design intent is that the joint gives rather than the brick, because a joint can be replaced and a brick face cannot.
So mortar that has weathered back, crumbles when you scrape it, and drops out in places is mortar that has done its job. It is at the end of its service life and needs replacing, which is what repointing is.
What is not normal is the opposite: intact joints with spalling brick faces. That usually means the joints are harder than the brick — a repointing done in the wrong mix — and the damage has been redirected to the part that cannot be replaced.
Why It Fails Here in Particular
Connecticut is a hard climate for masonry, and these are the reasons.
Freeze-thaw cycling
Water in a joint freezes, expands roughly a tenth, opens it further, thaws and repeats. Dozens of times a winter.
Age of the mortar

How to Tell Whether It Has Actually Failed
The field test takes a key or a screwdriver. Sound mortar resists — you can scratch it but not dig it out. Failed mortar crumbles and comes away, and you can often get a key into a joint up to the shaft.
Visually, look at how far the joints have weathered back from the face of the brick. A joint that has receded noticeably has lost enough material to stop protecting the brick edges, and once the edges are exposed the brick starts taking damage.
Mortar dust and grit accumulating at the base of the stack or on the roof is the other signal, and it is the one most often noticed first.
What Putting It Right Involves
Cutting out the failed mortar to a proper depth — around two to three times the joint width — rather than scraping at the surface. A skim of new mortar over old failed mortar looks right for a season and then falls out in sheets. It is the most common shortcut in this trade.
Then packing in new mortar in layers and tooling the joint so it sheds water rather than holding it. And crucially, using a mix no harder than the masonry it sits in: on an older Connecticut chimney that means a lime-rich mix matched to the original, not modern cement.
Repointing is rarely needed across a whole stack. Failure concentrates where the weather is worst — the top courses and the exposed face — so partial repointing is the normal scope.
Mortar needs temperatures above freezing to cure properly, so repointing is warm-season work in Connecticut rather than something that can be scheduled in January.
